Our properties all have a long history which we carefully curate for your information and to conserve the local culture. Malcolm’s family have farmed at How, the farm on the opposite end of Backaskaill bay, for six generations.
Backaskaill Farm was purchased from the Muir family in 1993. Having stood empty for several years, the house was renovated by Jackie & Malcom, and their younger son Fraser was born in the house in 2002 (and is currently still the last baby born on the island). Sold in 2007 to loving owners who continued its restoration, it was bought back in 2021 when it became Orkney Retreats’ flagship destination. The interiors are themed around the history of the farm and family with family historic artifacts and decorative themes used to reflect the island, the coast and the farm.
Boloquoy Farm was purchased in 2013 from the Drever (Fea) family. The former farmer stayed on until he moved to Kirkwall in 2022.
